IELTS 6.5: What Level It Is, Where It Is Accepted and How to Move Up to 7.0

Updated

IELTS 6.5 = B2 – large score next to a level badge

IELTS 6.5 is the upper end of B2 on the CEFR scale. It means competent English: you understand most texts and speech with ease, you can write and speak about complex topics, but you still make noticeable errors and sometimes simplify your ideas.

What Is 6.5 Enough For

  • most bachelor's programmes in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and Europe;
  • many master's programmes, especially in engineering, technology and business;
  • many student visas, including for test takers from India, Pakistan, Nigeria and the Philippines applying to the UK, Australia and Canada.

Where it is usually not enough: top-ranked universities (often 7.0–7.5), professional registration in medicine and law (7.0–7.5 in each skill), and the maximum points in immigration programmes.

What 6.5 Looks Like in Numbers

  • Listening: about 26–29 correct answers out of 40.
  • Reading Academic: about 27–29 out of 40.
  • Overall 6.5 can be achieved with different combinations, for example L 7.0, R 7.0, W 6.0, S 6.5 (average 6.625).

How rounding works is explained in the article “IELTS Band Scores”.

Why People Get Stuck at 6.5

This is the most “sticky” band. Typical reasons:

  1. Writing at 6.0. Ideas are listed but not developed; linking is mechanical; errors with articles and subject-verb agreement.
  2. Speaking at 6.0–6.5. Short answers, hesitation while searching for words, overuse of very, really, people.
  3. Technical losses in Listening and Reading: word limits, spelling, choosing False instead of Not Given.

How to Move Up to 7.0

  • Find your weakest skill. Take a mock test and check your band scores by skill.
  • Add 2–3 correct answers in Listening and Reading. That is often half a band in that skill and half a band overall. An error log and working with transcripts helps.
  • In Writing, develop one idea in depth instead of three superficial ideas and always write an overview in Task 1. Learn more: Writing assessment criteria.
  • In Speaking, use the formula “answer + reason + example” and record yourself to practise Fluency and Coherence and Pronunciation.

We describe a system for preparing to 7.5 and higher in the article “How to Get Band 8 in IELTS” and in the guide “IELTS Academic for 8+”.
